Merge matching tiles across the 4x4 grid until you build the 2048 tile. Regulars rate the challenge "Corner strategy or chaos" and the tempo "Turn-based - The pressure is spatial". You need nothing but Arrows / WASD (slide all tiles); on mobile, swipe takes over. This cabinet's family tree starts in 2014 (Gabriele Cirulli). No download, no account: 2048's corner of the Puzzle Arcade row loads and plays free in the browser.

When a plain high score stops being enough, today's daily 2048 challenge deals every player the identical seeded run until midnight UTC, and the global 2048 leaderboard keeps the score.

The History of 2048

Back in 2014, Gabriele Cirulli shipped 2048 and the sliding-block number puzzle was born. Our 2048 is that idea rebuilt line by line for the browser, tuned so a Gabriele Cirulli-era regular would still feel at home.

Inside the 2048 Cabinet

TL;DR: Merge matching tiles across the 4x4 grid until you build the 2048 tile. Expect corner strategy or chaos at a pace that's turn-based - the pressure is spatial.

2048 is the puzzle that ate the internet in a single month: a 4x4 grid, tiles that slide as one, and a rule so simple it fits in a breath - When two matching numbers touch, they merge and double. Every move spawns a new tile, so the board fills exactly as fast as your plans fall apart.

What starts as casual swiping becomes corner strategy, tile gradients, and the slow realization that one careless up-arrow can undo ten minutes of discipline. Our version keeps the classic feel with instant keyboard and swipe controls, tracks your best tile and score, and lets you keep playing past 2048 to chase 4096 and beyond.

And because luck deserves a level field, the daily challenge deals everyone the identical seeded board with the identical tile sequence - Same luck for all, one leaderboard, no excuses. One more game. It is always one more game.

Learn 2048 in Five Moves

1

Slide the whole board

Press an arrow key, WASD, or swipe, and every tile on the grid slides as far as it can in that direction. There is no moving one tile at a time - The board acts as one.

2

Merge matching pairs

When two tiles with the same number collide, they fuse into one tile of double the value, and that value is added to your score. Two 4s make an 8; two 1024s make the fabled 2048.

3

Watch the new tile spawn

After every move, a fresh 2 (or occasionally a 4) appears in a random empty cell. The board only ever gets fuller, so every merge is also housekeeping.

4

Build toward one corner

Pick a corner and herd your biggest tile into it, stacking the next largest tiles alongside. Order is what separates a 2048 run from a board full of orphaned 64s.

5

Keep going past 2048

Building the 2048 tile is the victory lap, not the finish line. Keep playing on the same board and push for 4096, 8192, and a score your past self would not believe.

Sharpest tip

Choose a corner and defend it with your life. Anchoring your biggest tile in one corner keeps the heavy tiles ordered and turns a chaotic grid into a production line feeding that corner.

  1. Ban one direction. If your big tiles live in the bottom-right, simply never press up - The forbidden direction is what rips your anchor out of its corner and shuffles your whole structure.
  2. Build a gradient. Arrange tiles so values step down as they move away from your corner, like 512-256-128-64 along the bottom row - Every new merge then rolls downhill into the next one.
  3. Keep your anchor row full. If the row holding your biggest tiles has an empty cell, a forced move can slide the whole row and wreck the corner - a packed row cannot shift.
  4. Do not chase small merges that break formation. A quick 4+4 in the wrong spot feels free, but if it costs your gradient, you paid for 8 points with the whole run.
  5. Count your empty cells and slow down under four. A crowded board means one bad spawn can lock you, so late-game moves deserve a two-second think that early moves do not.
  6. Set up chains before you cash them. Placing a 4 next to a 4 that sits beside an 8 and a 16 lets one swipe cascade through three merges - Chains clear space faster than any single merge can.

House Rules & Spin-Offs

Threes!

The 2014 original that started the genre: 1s and 2s combine into 3s, which merge upward from there, on a board with more grace and less forgiveness.

1024

The bridge between Threes! and 2048 - A free simplification that introduced the powers-of-two merging the world now knows by heart.

Big-board 2048

5x5 and 8x8 grids stretch the same rules across more space. Easier to survive, far harder to keep organized, and runs can last hours.

Themed and joke spinoffs

The 2014 explosion produced Fibonacci versions, hexagonal boards, and meme editions where tiles are faces instead of numbers - Proof of how portable the core rule is.

2048 Questions, Answered

What is the goal of 2048?
Slide and merge matching tiles until you build a tile showing 2048. The run ends only when the grid is full and no neighboring tiles match - So the real goal is staying organized.
What happens after I reach 2048?
You can keep playing on the same board. The merging never stops doubling, so dedicated players push on to 4096, 8192, and beyond while their score keeps climbing.
Why did I lose with empty space left?
You cannot lose with an empty cell - But a board can be one move from locked. If a forced move fills the last gaps with unmatchable tiles, the next spawn ends it, which is why formation matters.
Do new tiles ever spawn as 4s?
Yes. Most spawns are 2s, but a minority arrive as 4s. It is a small mercy on your merge count and occasionally a rude surprise in a tight corner.
Is every game of 2048 winnable?
No. Spawn luck can conspire against even perfect play, though disciplined corner strategy wins far more often than it loses. That sliver of chance is what keeps the game honest.
How does the daily 2048 challenge work?
The daily board is seeded from the date, so every player starts with the same tiles and receives the same spawn sequence. Scores on the daily leaderboard compare pure skill, not luck.
Can I play 2048 with touch controls?
Yes - Swipe up, down, left, or right anywhere on the board and the tiles slide instantly. 2048 was born in the browser and swiping is its native language.
Is 2048 free to play here?
Completely free, no download and no signup. Open the page and your first two tiles are already waiting.
