Climb the slanted girders and ladders to the top while leaping the barrels rolling down at you. Expect a challenge best described as "One jump mistimed is one life gone", at a pace that could be summed up as "Rhythmic climbing under bombardment". You need nothing but Arrows / WASD (walk and climb). It is our from-scratch tribute to Donkey Kong (Nintendo, 1981), rebuilt for the modern browser. No download, no account: Barrel Climb's corner of the Arcade Classics row loads and plays free in the browser.

For real stakes, today's daily Climb challenge deals every player the identical seeded run until midnight UTC, and the global Barrel Climb leaderboard keeps the score.

The History of Donkey Kong

Barrel Climb draws inspiration from Donkey Kong - Nintendo, 1981.

Back in 1981, Nintendo shipped Donkey Kong and the platformer (climbing action) was born. Our Barrel Climb is that idea rebuilt line by line for the browser, tuned so a Nintendo-era regular would still feel at home.

Inside the Barrel Climb Cabinet

TL;DR: Climb the slanted girders and ladders to the top while leaping the barrels rolling down at you. Expect one jump mistimed is one life gone at a pace that's rhythmic climbing under bombardment.

Barrel Climb is the founding drama of the platform genre staged on six slanted girders: you at the bottom, the goal at the top, and a supply of barrels rolling down every path between you. Barrels follow the girder slopes, drop to the level below when they roll off an edge, and sometimes take the ladders, which is exactly as rude as it sounds.

Your tools are a walk, a climb and one honest jump, plus a hammer parked halfway up that trades six seconds of barrel-smashing invincibility for the climbing you cannot do while holding it. Every barrel you leap pays a small bonus, every hammer smash a bigger one, and reaching the top pays best of all, with your remaining lives as the multiplier.

Eight levels ramp the barrel speed from polite to personal. Three lives cover the whole ascent, and the timing rhythm of jump, climb, wait, dash is the same lesson the original taught in 1981: the top girder is a place you earn.

Learn Barrel Climb in Five Moves

1

Climb the girders

Walk with the arrows, climb ladders with Up and Down. Each girder tilts, and everything rolling on it obeys the tilt.

2

Jump the barrels

Space hops you over a rolling barrel; clearing one in the air pays a bonus. Mistime it and a life is gone.

3

Watch the ladders

Barrels occasionally pour down ladders instead of rolling to the edge. A ladder you are climbing is not neutral ground.

4

Grab the hammer

The hammer on the middle girder smashes barrels for points for six seconds, but you cannot climb while it swings.

5

Reach the goal

Touch the top girder's platform to clear the level. Completion pays 300 plus 50 per remaining life, then the barrels speed up.

Score Higher at Barrel Climb

Sharpest tip

Climb on the beat: barrels arrive in waves, and the gap after each wave is your ladder window. Count it once and reuse it all level.

  1. Jump barrels early, not late: leaping as the barrel enters your girder gives margin, while panic hops at your toes end climbs.
  2. The hammer is a points decision, not a safety one. Take it when the girder below is crowded, skip it when the ladders above are clear.
  3. Never climb a ladder a barrel is approaching along the upper girder; wait one beat and let it choose the edge or the ladder first.
  4. Ladder-hopping barrels favor the same ladders every level. Learn which ones are haunted and route around them.
  5. On later levels, barrel speed beats your walk: plan each girder as one committed dash to the next ladder, not a stroll.
  6. Bank the jump bonuses when the climb is calm; 25 points a hop compounds across eight levels into a leaderboard's difference.

House Rules & Spin-Offs

Classic climb

Girders, ladders, barrels and one goal at the top: the form Barrel Climb honors.

Elevator and rivet stages

The original's later boards swapped barrels for elevators and rivet-pulling, an early lesson in level variety.

Vertical climbers

A whole genre of ice-axe and platform ascents grew from this template; our Sky Hopper carries the endless branch.

Speed climbs

Score-attack rules reward flawless no-death ascents; the daily seed makes every climb comparable here.

Climb Questions, Answered

What do the barrels actually do?
They roll down each girder's slope, fall to the girder below at the edges, and sometimes descend ladders. Speed rises every level.
How does the hammer work?
Walk into it to grab it. For six seconds you smash barrels on contact for 75 points each, but you cannot jump onto ladders while it is active.
What pays the most points?
Reaching the goal (300 plus a life bonus), then hammer smashes, then jump-overs. Pure survival pays nothing, exactly like the cabinet era.
How many levels are there?
Eight, each faster and denser than the last. Finishing all eight with lives to spare is genuine bragging material.
Is the barrel pattern random?
Spawn timing and ladder choices are seeded randomness, so the daily challenge serves every player the identical bombardment.
