The Full Story

A hitbox is the invisible shape a game actually uses to decide collisions. The picture you see, the sprite, is for your eyes; the hitbox is for the physics. When a rock 'grazes' your ship and you survive, the sprites overlapped but the hitboxes did not. The near-miss really did miss.

Designers tune hitboxes as carefully as any visible art. Player hitboxes are usually drawn a little smaller than the sprite, because a game that kills you when you visibly dodged feels broken, while a game that forgives by a pixel feels thrillingly fair. Enemy hitboxes often run slightly generous for the same reason: hits you barely landed should count.

You can feel tuned hitboxes all over this floor. Flappy Jet's jet survives brushes that look fatal, Asteroids grants a hair of grace around the ship's nose, and Freeway Frog forgives a toe over the lane line. Learning a machine's true hitboxes, as opposed to its pictures, is one of the quiet skills that separates good scores from great ones.

Heard on the Arcade Floor

“That gap is wider than it looks; the pipe's hitbox ends two pixels before the sprite does.”

Where You'll Feel Hitbox on This Floor

You can feel hitbox working inside 3 machines on our floor, Flappy Jet first among them:

  • Flappy Jet (tap to climb, breathe to crash) - tap to keep your jet airborne and thread it through every gap in the pipes, where hitbox shows up on every single run.
  • Asteroids (thrust, drift, and blast rocks into gravel) - split giant asteroids into smaller pieces and clear the field without crashing, and hitbox is half the battle.
  • Freeway Frog (five lanes of traffic, one very brave frog) - hop across busy lanes and a hazardous river to reach the lily pads, and hitbox helps decide whether you manage it.

The fastest way to learn hitbox is to go feel it in a Flappy Jet run.
